Fellowship Programme What To Expect

What you can expect from an ICENI Centre International Fellowship:

An annual appraisal with educational and clinical supervisors with help developing surgical skills, curriculum vitae building, abstracts, presentations and papers for journal submission.
Regular & free access to the ICENI Centre Skills Lab and Simulation Suite with state-of-the-art augmented and virtual reality equipment in robotic surgery, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, endovascular, ophthalmology and endoscopy.
A dedicated ICENI Centre International Fellowship Officer to provide personal support throughout your Fellowship, looking after your welfare both in and outside of work. Regular social events are arranged, creating a unique ICENI Centre International Fellowship community.
An opportunity to represent The ICENI Centre and deliver presentations locally and internationally.
An ICENI Centre e-log book to record your clinical portfolio signed off by your Educational/Clinical Supervisor.
An ICENI Centre International Fellowship certificate.

Fellowship Programme Entry Requirements

The British Council IELTS English Language Test (IELTS for UKVI Academic) or OET (Occupational English Test) Medicine version

IELTS – Score of at least 7.0 in each testing area and an overall score of 7.5
OET – At least a grade ‘B’ in each testing area (speaking, listening, reading and writing)

Primary Medical Qualification Certificate (PMQ)

A copy of your decorative PMQ certificate given to you when you first qualified. It must confirm the exact date that you met all of the requirements for the award of your degree (the date that you passed your final examination/assessment). It must meet the GMC’s criteria for acceptable overseas qualifications

Certificate of Good Standing (CGS)

A CGS from the medical regulatory authority in any countries where you’ve held registration during the last five years. Find out which medical authorities you need to contact. Certificates are only valid for three months and they must be in date when we’re ready to approve your registration.

Evidence of clinical experience

Candidates will need to demonstrate they’ve completed at least three years of full-time equivalent postgraduate training, including:

One year’s internship (which can be multi-specialty or based solely in one specialty),
Minimum of three years in their specialty.

Candidate must have been in full time clinical work for the year directly prior to their Fellowship start date.

Translations

You must submit a complete and accurate translation of every document you provide that is not in English:

A copy of the original document, along with a copy of the English translation.
The translation must have the name and contact details of the translator or translation service either on it, or attached to it.

Exposure to Complex Laparosopcic Procedures.

How was the support you received from the admin team prior and during the programme?

It was very helpful and supportive.

How would you describe your experience with the clinical team and activities you undertook?

Involved in major, and complex major cases , in addition I was actively involved in audits and research projects.

What benefits did it give you?

Enhanced my Minimal invasive skills.

What are your plans for the future after the Fellowship programme finishes?

I will be joining North Bristol NHS trust as Royal College Fellow in Colorectal Surgery.

How would you describe your experience with the clinical team and activities you undertook?

I performed an adequate number of Colorectal resections in the first 6 months of my fellowship. Unfortunately my exposure to elective colorectal resections has decreased due to the COVID outbreak.

What benefits did it give you?

Improved skills and independency.

As an ICENI Fellow in Gynaecology, I have access to high quality simulation training for laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in the ICENI Centre. New equipment of the latest technology was brought in recently, and I cannot wait to start training in the Centre’s safe and stress free environment using the virtual and augmented reality technology.

Hara Koukouli Former ICENI Centre International Fellow - Obstetrics & Gynaecology

I am currently pursuing a Clinical Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at Ipswich hospital, United Kingdom. My prior training was in General Surgery and Surgical Oncology at the National Guard Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The two-year program is ideal to guide candidates through the concepts, especially for those surgeons having basic training in breast surgery or surgical oncology. I have a great team of clinical and educational supervisors they set a clear plan for the two years and they supervise each step in my training. I have learnt the surgical techniques of skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy, implantbased whole breast reconstructions, autologous partial breast reconstructions using perforator flaps, reduction mammoplasty, lipomodelling, nipple reconstruction and tattooing; something which is beyond cancer treatment but equally important. Also, I have had good hands-on experience with breast-conserving surgery, Seed-guided breast conservation surgery and sentinel node biopsy. Various reconstructive options to be considered for each patient and treatment planning are taught as well. The Multidisciplinary meetings have provided an excellent opportunity to keep up with the current evidence in breast cancer and decisionmaking. As an oncoplastic fellow, I am in charge of oncoplastic tumour board meetings preparation every week, oncoplastic breast surgeons and oncologist attend these jointly. The fellowship also has good scope for clinical research and audits. I have been involved in service evaluation audit, retrospective clinical studies and teaching medical student in clinic. This has benefited me in the form of presentations at national and international meetings and research publications. A comfortable work atmosphere, intense high-volume elective work with no on-call commitment And Managing clinics is has a good role to play in developing communication skills and patient counselling, things that are of benefit in the long-term. To conclude, there is a lot to learn and take back home. I will be able to provide options of partial and immediate breast reconstruction to breast cancer patients when indicated, a huge psychological benefit as compared to a mastectomy. I also look forward to training general and breast surgeons from Saudi in oncoplastic techniques, in collaboration with my colleagues in the United Kingdom.
