Rectal Cancer

Mr. Tan Arulampalam is leading the study of rectal cancer treatment including the planned trial in conjunction with the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. Patients with resectable tumours proceed, in general, to a laparoscopic resection. Patients with locally advanced rectal cancer undergo specialist staging investigations and, if suitable, long course chemoradiotherapy. Post treatment imaging and clinical assesment take place at intervals to assess response to treatment. Surgery is usually deferred to allow radiotherapy to take maximum effect.. This regime has been instituted by Dr. Bruce Sizer, consultant oncologist, and accepted by the multidiscuplinary team. Mr. Arulamapalam has represented the ICENI Centre at FICARE 1 and 2 in Sao Paolo. This meeting has brought together many of the worlds leading specialists in the treatment of rectal cancer.
