Ralph Austin was appointed to Colchester General Hospital in October 2002 as a general and colorectal laparoscopic surgeon after spending time at Dr. George Fielding’s laparoscopic unit in Brisbane, Australia. Together with Mr Tan Arulampalam, he takes part in a weekly, joint
consultant, laparoscopic operating training list that completed well over 80 laparoscopic colorectal resections in its first year. He also performs multidisciplinary laparoscopic procedures with urological and gynaecological colleagues and is on the faculty of various national and international laparoscopic courses including the European Surgical Institute in Hamburg. He has a strong interest in IT and has developed an internet-based system that allows the worldwide registration of laparoscopic procedures on an anonymous basis which can be found at www.oootta.com
