Surgical Courses
Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery (Introduction)
The one-day course comprises instructive lectures that summarise the present
status of the laparoscopic approach, describes surgical techniques and anatomy,
and discusses starting up a laparoscopic colorectal service. Demonstrates and
transmissions of live laparoscopic colorectal surgery from the theatres in
Colchester reinforce the leaning experience and usually also includes an
overseas broadcast. Interaction with the operating surgeons is encouraged. The
course covers the more straightforward colonic procedures such as right
hemicolectomy, sigmoid colectomy, rectopexy and ilio-caecal resection for
Crohn’s disease and is an idea introduced to those thinking of starting this
technique.
- One-day course n Getting started
- Literature review n Equipment requirements
- Operative techniques review n Starting a laparoscopic colorectal service
- Live demonstrations n Course DVD/video

Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery (Advanced)
This two-day course includes live video transmissions from the theatres in
Colchester as well as overseas broadcast from guest surgeon. Instructive
lectures cover techniques, surgical anatomy and a full review of the literature
available on laparoscopic colorectal surgery. How to set up a laparoscopic
colorectal service will also be discussed. Course participants are fully
encouraged to interact with the operating surgeons to ensure the techniques
presented are clearly understood. While all laparoscopic colorectal operations
are discussed, the course tends to concentrate on more complex procedures such
as mobilisation of the splenic flexure, anterior resection and abdominoperineal
resection of the rectum.
- Two-day course
- Literature review
- Operative techniques review
- Live demonstrations
- Getting started
- Equipment requirements
- Starting a laparoscopic colorectal service
- Course DVD/video
- Dinner, transportation and hotel accommodation

Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery
This two-day course comprises instructive lectures and live transmissions of
laparoscopic surgery, comparing both the transabdominal (TAPP) and tonally
extraperitoneal (TEPP) approaches to inguinal hernia repair. Repair of midline
and incisional hernias is also included. The surgical approaches and techniques
involved will be demonstrated during the operations, and discussion between the
delegates and the operating surgeons is encouraged to ensure the techniques are
clearly understood.
- One-day course n TEPP Inguinal hernia repair
- Operative techniques review n Incisional and midline hernia repair
- Live demonstrations n Course DVD/video
- TAPP Inguinal hernia repair

Bile Duct and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
The two-day course covers the more complex laparoscopic biliary procedures.
Instructive lectures are combined with live transmissions of advanced
laparoscopic surgery to discuss approaches to the difficult gallbladder. The
role of on-table cholangiography and the methods of performing this
laparoscopically are also discussed. The course then moves on to the
laparoscopic exploration of the bile duct, where all of the techniques are shown
in detail during live operating sessions. Laparoscopic suturing - a prerequisite
for these more advanced procedures - is also covered in detail and the course
includes a practical session where techniques can be rehearsed within
laparoscopic simulators. As well as the above operations, there is also the
chance to see other advanced laparoscopic procedures such as splenectomy,
fundoplication, hernia repair or colorectal resection during the course.
- Two-day course n Laparoscopic suturing techniques
- Difficult gallbladder surgery n Simulator sessions including knot tying
and suturing
- Live demonstrations n Course manual and DVD/video
- On table cholangiography n Dinner, transportation and hotel accommodation
- Laparoscopic bile duct exploration

Laparoscopic Upper GI Surgery
This one-day course combines instructive lectures and live
transmissions of surgery to explore the laparoscopic approach to
benign and malignant gastrointestinal disease. Surgical approaches
and techniques are described throughout the operations and the
delegates are fully encouraged to interact and converse with the operating
surgeons. Procedures covered include oesophagectomy, Nissen fundoplication,
splenectomy, gastroenterostomy and feeding jejunostomy.
- One-day course n Course DVD/video
- Review of operating techniques n Feeding jejunostomy
- Live demonstrations n Malignant disease

Laparoscopic Surgery for Theatre Personnel
This one-day course is for theatre personnel who are regularly involved with
advanced laparoscopic procedures. Participants are familiarised with the
instruments and theatre lay-outs required for this type of surgery and the
integrated laparoscopic theatre is demonstrated. A live transmission
demonstrates and reviews the points discussed in earlier lectures, with
discussion between the delegates and surgical team encouraged.
- One-day course
- Review of operative techniques
- The integrated laparoscopic theatre
- Electro and ultrasonic surgical instruments
- Live surgery

Maximising the Recovery of Patients Following Surgery
This one-day course reviews the processes that influence the rate of
post-operative patient recovery with the aim of returning to the pre-operative
status as soon as possible. The roles of anaesthesia, surgery, early
mobilisation and feeding, and pre- and post-operative nursing are discussed to
develop protocols that can lead to patients being discharged as quickly as three
days after major colonic surgery.
- One-day course n Early mobilisation and feeding
- Pre-operative assessment n Post operative nursing
- Review of anaesthetic techniques n Protocols for enhanced recovery
